Due to the anticipated volume of applications, only those candidates selected to proceed through the process will be contacted.

When a decision is made to consider an experienced officer for hire, applications will be reviewed and interviews scheduled. The interview will be conducted by a panel of two or more senior officers.  The best qualified candidate(s) will be selected to move into the background investigation phase of the process. The candidate will be notified before any contact is made with his/her current police service.

Upon successful completion of the background investigation, the candidate will receive a conditional offer of employment with the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service.  The offer will be conditional upon the successful completion of a psychological examination, medical examination, vision examination and hearing examination.

Experienced officers will be hired as Fourth Class Constables.  Seniority will be determined by the date that a member is sworn in as a Police Constable with the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service.

New officers, recruits and experienced, will be entitled to annual leave as per the Collective Agreement.  Benefits commence on the first day of employment. There is no hold back period for any of the benefits (exception dental coverage) offered in the current benefit package.

Members of the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service participate in the Ontario Municipal Employees Retirement System (OMERS) pension plan. It is compulsory that members contribute to the plan. Experienced officers who have contributed to another pension plan may contact O.M.E.R.S. to determine if their plan is transferable.
